A Little History

Passing along a sense of Jewish heritage to the next generation was one of the compelling reasons Shoreshim was founded over 30 years ago by a small group of early Restonians. The small "do-it-yourself" community met in the living rooms of the founders' homes. Thus began the non-dogmatic searching for roots, parents engaged with children, learning together.

Shoreshim's Religious School
- The goal of Shoreshim's Religious School is to provide a warm, child-centered environment for learning both Judaics and Hebrew.
- We meet on Monday afternoons at 4pm during the Academic School Year, September - May (excluding Jewish Holidays and FCPS Holidays).
- Our School meets in Reston.
- Shoreshim has adopted "Curriculum for a Jewish Religious School" from the Board of Jewish Education (BJE)
- Our Staff work hard to provide age-appropriate sessions that captivate a child's interest in his/her Jewish heritage through songs, drama, games, arts & crafts, poetry, and Midrash.
- We organize special assemblies such as our Hanukah assembly or our model Pesach seder.
- We participate in field trips to area synagogues, museums and other sites of interest.
Shoreshim's Education on the concept of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world)
Our Staff coordinate an Annual Mitzvah Day. Past activities include:
- The assembly of brown bag lunches for a local homeless shelter.
- The creation of blankets for chronically ill children through Project Linus.
- The collection of Hebrew and Judaics textbooks for Jewish orphans in Uganda.
- The production of hand-sewn teddy bears for hospitalized children.
In recognition of Shorehsim's many Interfaith Families
Our Staff makes every effort to provide an inclusive atmosphere for children with varying levels of Jewish educational backgrounds. Whatever your child's age or level of religious education, Shoreshim welcomes you and your family. At Shoreshim, you will find a caring staff of experienced teachers who will ease your child's transition and help him or her develop new friendships.
